Estepona's Virgen del Carmen Festival

Throughout Andalucia - July 16 

Seafaring villages along the Andalucia coast push the boat out literally to bless the next season’s catch. The local virgin is taken out of the church and paraded through the streets before being taken for a trip round the bay on a boat festooned with flowers, accompanied by a flotilla of fishing smacks. Held on the same date each year, celebrations vary from town to town but there’s usually a brass band, fireworks and spit-roasted sardines on the beach.
